Plant Project is here again and every year it is conducted during the first term. As part of the syllabus, our Year 2 and Year 3 students are taught about plants and how they are important to us. Maria Montessori believed that caring for plants is part of caring for the environment and it is a wonderful opportunity for a child to develop responsibility, discipline, and most importantly affection for nature.
Each year different activities are prepared for the students. This time, they are given a chance to plant their own. Capsicum, Pechay (Bokchoi), and Sunflower seeds were prepared for them to plant.
The planting activity was done indoors. The seeds were planted in the soil placed on egg cartons and popsicle sticks were used to poke the soil to make holes. All year 2 and year 3 students took part in planting.
After 2 weeks, these plants will be transplanted into bigger containers and styrofoam boxes for them to have enough space and enough soil as they grow. Through this activity, we see that our kids are happy and they feel proud of themselves that they have done something big not only for themselves but for the nature.
